Foods That Support Healthy Aging

Foods That Support Healthy Aging

As we age, what we eat affects our fitness, the way we look, quality of life, etc.

Our body relies on the type of nutrients we offer to support the natural aging process. Some of those nutrients slow down the signs of aging by giving you healthy young skin.

Here are some common types of food to help you look younger for a long time:

Fish

Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Fatty fish like salmon prevent cognitive decline and improves brain function. Omega-3s have also been shown to reduce systemic inflammation. Inflammation is linked to all stages of gum disease, so consuming foods to prevent inflammation can help to prevent gum disease.

Salmon also provides a good source of vitamin D, which has been shown to improve gum health. Vitamin D helps reduce inflammation and improves the body’s ability to fight bacteria.

Salmon contains selenium as well, which has been shown to help prevent gum disease. Some fish contains high levels of mercury, so be careful about the amount of fish you consume.

Broccoli

Broccoli is a cruciferous vegetable that contains vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium, potassium, and dietary fiber. It also contains sulforaphane, a compound that has been shown to prevent cancer.

Broccoli can be eaten raw or cooked, and it can be blended into a smoothie.

Blueberries

Blueberries are rich in antioxidants, which can neutralize the free radicals in our body. Free radicals can cause cell damage, and this can lead to premature aging. Blueberries can also protect our skin from sun damage.

Yogurt

Yogurt contains calcium and protein, both of which are necessary for bone health. Protein and calcium both work to repair bone damage. A diet lacking in calcium can cause osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to weaken and break more easily.

Calcium is also necessary for muscle health. Without enough calcium, muscles become weak and prone to injury. Yogurt with live cultures contains probiotic bacteria that help to maintain digestive health and fight infection.

Nuts

Nuts go great in trail mixes, can be dipped in chocolate or peanut butter, or enjoyed on their own. Almonds, walnuts, and pecans are all packed with antioxidants and vitamin E. These nutrients protect the body from free radicals, which can decrease the aging process.

Nuts also improve bone health by boosting bone mineral density. They can even reduce the risk of developing heart disease and cancer.

Avocados

Avocados are rich in vitamins E and K, which both contribute to the maintenance of healthy gums. The vitamins also prevent the effects of aging that can destroy tooth enamel, such as receding gums, tooth decay, and tooth loss.

Green Tea

Green tea is a natural beverage that has been linked to many health benefits. It can be consumed hot or cold and can be enjoyed either on its own or with meals.

Green tea is a rich source of antioxidants, polyphenols, and catechins, which may help reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation can contribute to premature aging and may be a factor in the development of oral cancer.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate contains antioxidants that have been shown to protect the skin from UV radiation damage. Cocoa butter has anti-inflammatory properties and is rich in fat. Fats help to bind skin cells together, which helps keep the skin moist.
