Everything To Know About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing practices in the world, and is based on the theory that energy runs through the body along specific paths. This energy is known as “qi” and is pronounced, “chi.” When these paths become blocked, it’s thought that it results in pain.

Practitioners insert tiny needles into specific points on a patient’s body to address blockages, relieve tension, and stimulate energy. This procedure is used to promote healing, reduce pain, and ease muscle tension.

What Does Acupuncture Treat?

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine in which doctors insert tiny needles into specific pressure points in the body to relieve pain. It is most commonly used to relieve pain associated with chronic conditions.

Acupuncture can also help with:

  • Depression
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Arthritis
  • Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)

Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture allows patients to achieve relief from pain without the use of drugs or surgery. Acupuncture needles are inserted into specific points on the body, called acupuncture points, where nerves, muscles, and connective tissue are close to the surface. These points are believed to help the body heal itself.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture needles are sterile and only used once. Your acupuncturist will clean your skin prior to inserting the needles.

Acupuncture needles are very thin. You may be able to feel a slight prick when the needle is inserted, but you won’t feel much more than a little pinch. Acupuncture needles are usually around 0.25 millimeters. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), acupuncture is becoming an increasingly popular complementary and alternative medicine. Acupuncture has no known side effects and is generally considered safe when performed by a licensed practitioner.

Your acupuncturist may use acupuncture needles in conjunction with cupping. Cupping involves placing a cup on your skin and then removing the air to create a vacuum. The cups are usually left in place for several minutes. Cupping may leave you feeling slightly sore, but you shouldn’t feel any pain.

Is Acupuncture Only For Adults?

Acupuncture is safe and effective for both children and adults. Children can benefit from acupuncture for many of the same reasons adults do, like ear infections, sinus issues, and allergies.

Is Acupuncture Painful?

The answer is no. The needles used to perform acupuncture are so thin that you may not feel anything more than a slight prick. Some people compare it to the feeling of an ant bite.

During the consultation, the acupuncturist will ask you about your medical history, lifestyle, and body health. They will also ask about any pain you’re experiencing. This way, they’ll know the best method of treatment.
